The only thing I knew about Belgium comicbooks was that they were big in the 50's and 60's and that Belgians were responsible for creating such comic wonders as TinTin and The Smurfs. To tell you the truth I didn't really have any expectations of this museum and really just wanted to see the big figurines of TinTin and the Captain in spacesuits that I had seen on a brochuere.
This place is a little hard to find but once you arrive you are not disapointed. While all the displays are in French and Dutch, it isn't too hard to work out what is going on, after all art is surely one of the international languages, right?
The museum takes you through the key publications and comic strips of Belgium as well as the profiles of the most famous Belgian comic artisits like Herge, the creator of TinTin. A highlight for me was seeing an actual sketch of a TinTin book that Herge did. After viewing this museum I have a new found love and appreciation of TinTin and ended up buying three of the books in the gift shop.
I think the pictures speak for themselves.
